Powell family papers, 1851-1918.

Collection consists of personal, social, and business records relating to the John A. Powell family and the Joseph B.V. Butler family of Linn and Polk counties, Oregon. The collection includes the following: 1. Manuscript guide book listing mileage and condition of the trail from Fort Hall to the John Day River, Oregon in 1851. It includes sundry feed and ferriage accounts for the overland journey, and accounts of the estate of Anthony Probst, deceased. 2. Account book, 1857-1871, and daybook, 1868-1869, of lumber and mill work sales by the Powell mill, Linn County, Oregon. 3. Memory book of Paradine Butler, 1853, with verses, sentiments, and braided hair samples. 4. Diary of Rilla Yambert, McCutchenville, Ohio, 1884, describing housework, teaching of Sunday school, singing school, and organ playing. 5. Ledger of Ezra Poppleton's general store, Monmouth, Oregon, 1874-1876 (2 volumes). Volume 1 includes the 1866-1867 ledger of G.T. Bolter, broom maker in Portland, Oregon. 6. Copybook of Allie Butler, Monmouth, Oregon, 1877, containing transcriptions of sacred and popular songs. 7. Articles of incorporation and minutes of directors of Alden Fruit Preserving Co., Monmouth, Oregon, 1877-1878. 8. Constitution and by-laws, membership list, and minutes of Monmouth Literary Association, 1898-1901. 9. Constitution, membership list, and minutes of the Priscilla Club of Monmouth, Oregon, 1914-1918.

The Powell family traveled overland from Monmouth, Illinois to Monmouth, Oregon in the 1850s. Ira F.M. Butler and Joseph B.V. Butler, Sr. traveled with their families to Monmouth in 1849 from Monmouth, Illinois. Ira C. Powell worked at the U.S. National Bank in Monmouth. He started in 1889 and continued until his death in 1940. He worked as a janitor, clerk, bookkeeper, manager, and finally as president from 1915 to 1940. J.F.
